The French ruminant farming system is part of a sustainable and responsible production goal, and it contributes to our food sovereignty. Mainly pasture-based and on a human scale, it is autonomous and respects animal welfare. It maintains a strong connection with local territories, shapes landscapes, helps preserve soil fertility, contributes to carbon storage, and protects biodiversity by utilizing and maintaining natural resources. Ruminant farming thus provides many often unrecognized services, which the CNE and the sectors, with the support of the Livestock Institute, wish to highlight and make known.

Based on a synthesis of scientific and technical knowledge, 22 thematic factsheets have been produced to provide an objective, quantified, and well-argued description of the reality of practices and the services provided, as well as the solutions implemented and promoted by the profession and the sectors to make progress.
