This document presents the milk recording results of cattle, goats and sheep in France for the year 2021.

CATTLE :

32,669 herds provided 2,064,131 qualified lactations in 2021. Decreasing respectively from 6.1% and 6.2% the herd number and the number of qualified lactations confirm the trend observed since several years. The three main French national breeds (Prim’Holstein, Montbéliarde and Normande) represent henceforth 90.6% of the total of qualified lactations (-0.4% compared to 2020). With 46.8% the percentage of herds with more than 60 qualified lactations is stable in 2021, confirming the end of the rising trend observed the previous year (46.8 in 2020, 47.5 in 2019, 45.1% in 2018 and 40.1% in 2017). In the same time, with 68.8% the rate of qualified lactations they represent follow the same trend (68.8% in 2020, 69% in 2019, 66.9% in 2018 and 63.1% in 2017). With an average milk production for complete lactations at 8,887 Kg, the milk yield is increasing in 2021 (+ 180kg). In the same time the average lactation duration reach 344 days (+4 days). Mean fat and protein rates reach
respectively to 40.6 g/kg for fat (+0.1) and 32.9 g/kg for proteins (+0.1). A noticeable improvement in somatic cell count situation is again observed. The proportion of lactations for which all the test-dates obtain cell counts lower than 300,000 cells and the proportion of lactations having at least 2 test-dates with cell counts higher than 800,000 reach respectively 54.1% et 11.3%.

GOAT :

The number of qualified lactations is slightly increasing in 2021 to reach 235,778 lactations (+ 2.863 lactations, +1.2 %). At the same time, the number of flocks is slightly decreasing to reach 1,457 flocks (-1.1%). The two main breeds (Alpine and Saanen) represent henceforth 96.5% of the total of qualified lactations. The proportion of primiparous dairy goats is slightly increasing and reaches 36 % (+0.5%), confirming the trend observed since 2018 (+0.8% in 2019, +1.7% in 2020). The milk yield reach 992 Kg per lactation (+3Kg). The lactation duration is stable at 321 days, confirming the increase observed for a few years (298 days in 2014). Meanwhile true-protein and fat rates are still increasing and reaches respectively 33.6 g/Kg (+0.2) and 37.7 g/Kg (+0.1).

SHEEP :

Increasing by 4,740 (+1.4%), the total number of ewes present at the lambing period reached 335,171 in 2021. At the same time the total number of ewes with lactation calculation is increasing on 6,879 and reaches 285,321 (+2.4%). This increase of the ewes number on official milk recording (CLO) puts an end to the stability observed over the previous two years. 750 flocks are counted up today in Official Milk Recording, which is identical to that of the previous year. Meanwhile, with 447 ewes, the average size of flock still progressed in 2021 (441 ewes in 2020, 433 in 2019 and 428 in 2018). In 2021, the average milk yield is increasing for all breeds, Lacaune and Manech Tête Rousse breeds +7.3 liters, Basco Béarnaise breed +10 liters, Corse breed +3.8 liters, Manech Tête Noire breed +8.8 liters. At the national level the milk yield reached 299.2 liters (+7.6 liters) in 171 days (+2 days). A simplified milk recording, corresponding to the D recording method in the ICAR nomenclature and not presented in this document, exists in addition to the Official Milk Recording AC design. It concerns commercial flocks out of the selection nucleus (while the Official Milk Recording is devoted only to breeders involved in the selection program). 1,156 flocks and 531,798 ewes present at the lambing period were submitted to D recording in 2021.
