The Institut de l’Élevage (French Cattle Breeding Institute) and FCEL (French MRO umbrella organization) display every year benchmarks about the level of production of dairy cows, in order to provide to whom it may concern an objective means of comparison with other countries.

These benchmarks, corresponding to reference lactation (305 days) adjusted to adult level for each breed, are outlined in table 1.

Method of calculation

In order to adjust to adult level, a multiplying factor depending on the parity is applied to milk and contents:

  • If the parity is 1, the multiplying factor is 1.30,
  • If the parity is 2, the multiplying factor is 1.12,
  • If the parity is 3, the multiplying factor is 1.03,
  • If the parity is 4 and over, the multiplying factor is 1.

NB : these benchmarks are integrated in French MR official publications and sent to ICAR.
