CFD - CSA Webinaire : Methane and genetics in cattle : what role can genetics play in reducing emissions ?
Webinar: Cattle Genetics and Reducing Methane Emissions
On 28 September 2026, a webinar organised as part of the European projects Climate Farm Demo and ClimateSmartAdvisors explored the role of genetic selection in reducing methane emissions from cattle, with around 30 participants. Discussions focused on genetic evaluations for methane emissions, the indicators currently available, and the data and methods used to measure these emissions. Drawing on CAP'2ER data, the webinar also examined the links between genetics, farming practices and methane emissions, with a particular focus on the characteristics of the lowest-emitting dairy farms. Finally, discussions explored the potential of genetics as a tool for reducing methane emissions, as well as the questions that remain to be addressed, alongside herd management practices.
