FROM THE EDITOR

The Mil'Ouv project is coming to an end and the International Encounters of Practitioners of Mediterranean Agro-silvo-pastoralism (RIAAM) provided the opportunity to close the project and report on the activities that have been carried out during the past four years. In addition to providing support for breeders, the project has strengthened partnerships and reinforced working methods that will be useful in the coming years.

PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENTS

Closing seminar of the Mil'Ouv project : The RIAAM

The International Encounters of Practitioners of Mediterranean Agro-silvo-pastoralism (RIAAM) took place from 17 - 20 October 2017. Over 190 participants attended the event, which aimed to combine two projects at a single meeting: the closure of the LIFE+ MIL'OUV programme and a meeting of experts on the UNESCO Causses and Cévennes region. A range of professionals, including agricultural technicians, environmental officers, shepherds and breeders, as well as local elected representatives, government officials, researchers and teachers, met to reflect on and identify action for the future of Mediterranean pastoral regions. The 4 days were rich and varied, alternating thematic presentations with site visits and debates on the challenges of pastoralism.

A summary of the proceedings will be available on-line shortly. In the meantime all the presentation slides can be seen on the RIAAM web site.

Publication of an educational booklet

The Mil'Ouv method can now be used with students! The Florac Educational Institute of agro-environment (Montpellier SupAgro) has worked to adapt the Mil'Ouv eco-pastoral diagnostic method for a learners. By deconstructing certain preconceptions that often opposes production and protection of natural resources, it will be interesting to make use of this tool in agricultural or environmental courses.

An educational booklet has also been produced to help teachers introduce the method in their teaching modules. It formalises the adjustments made to the tools by teachers so that the Mil'Ouv method is included in several agricultural and environmental courses, from high school level to the BTSA higher technical certificate in agriculture.

Awarness day : Compensation measures and pastoralism

The work carried out as part of the Mil'Ouv project included a focus on support for pastoral activities that promote management of nature reserves and agricultural areas. A training programme for government staff was launched with this intention. The last module of the programme was held on 23 November 2017 in Fabrègues and in the Gardiole Massif on the theme of "Pastoralism and ecological compensation measures for development: examples and implementation". 35 people actively participated in the day's discussions, with panel members representing both the challenges and the practitioners (project managers, instructors, agricultural practitioners, environmental practitioners, local authorities and technical and research institutes).

Pastoral Rummy : a game to stimulate discussions

The Pastoral Rummy was completed during the Life+ Mil'ouv programme. It is a serious board game that combines a paper "board" and a computerized simulator/calculator formatted for use with Excel. The aim of the Pastoral Rummy is to stimulate discussion in small groups (of breeders, advisors, students) on feeding practices on livestock farms that include pastoral grazing. Technicians from the programme's partners followed the training course and were given the tool to propose to groups of breeders in their areas. It is currently being adapted for use in teaching. The tool (the board + the simulation software) is also available to purchase.

Nicolas Hulot, the French Minister of ecological transition based on solidarity visited the network of French conservatories of natural environments (Conservatoires d'espaces naturels - CEN) on 27 October 2017. He was welcomed to the Cher Valley by Emeric Du Verdier, Director of the CEN Loir-et-Cher, who presented him with a copy of the book "Terres pastorals" (grazing lands) during a morning spent discussing biodiversity and agriculture.

THE MIL’OUV WEB PAGE IS BEING UPDATED!

The Mil'Ouv programme finishes at the end of the year but the Mil'Ouv web page will shortly be updated so that the range of publications and tools developed during the project will remain available for free download on the site.
