Bandeau Life+ Milouv
Number seven  |  Thursday, July 27 2017

The Mil'Ouv project is in the home straight now and the last six months have been rich in output and reflection. The team is now working on preparations for the International Encounters of Practitioners of Mediterranean Agrosilvopastoralism (RIAAM) in October 2017, a seminar that will close the programme by sharing the outputs and results achieved over the past 4 years.

Enjoy the read!

This is the percentage of breeders who express a positive view of biodiversity and believe that is an advantage on their farm.

(Data obtained from a sample of 126 breeders surveyed through the Mil'Ouv project)

Closing seminar of the Mil'Ouv project : The RIAAM

The International Encounters of Practitioners of Mediterranean Agrosilvopastoralism (RIAAM) will take place from 17-20 October 2017 in Montpellier and Florac. This major international event will be an opportunity to exchange on key issues in Mediterranean agrosilvopastoralism, to discover pastoral territories (particularly "the Causses and the Cévennes" region, a listed World Heritage site) and to present the results of the Life+ Mil'Ouv project.

The programme of the International Encounters includes presentations, opportunities for exchange (especially during brainstorming workshops) as well as field visits and case studies from breeders.

Training in agro-pastoral management and biodiversity

A new session of the "Agro-pastoral management and biodiversity" course provided by the Life+ Mil'Ouv programme took place at Supagro Florac from 12-16 June 2017. 12 agricultural technicians and naturalists, managers of natural spaces and teachers from agricultural colleges were able to adopt the Mil'Ouv method and use it in the field at two farms in the Lozère region.

A final training session under the umbrella of the Mil'Ouv programme will be held from 18-22 September 2017. Register now!

Two Mil'Ouv publications at the EGF Seminar in Sardinia

A poster on the "Pastoral Rummy" and a talk on the Mil'ouv method of eco-pastoral diagnosis were presented at the recent European Grassland Federation seminar held from 7-10 May 2017 in Sardinia. It was an opportunity to present part of the project and to communicate on the eco-pastoral diagnostic approach to an international audience of researchers.

Now available : a publication, technical guide and a video

"Terres pastorales -Diversité et valeurs des milieux ouverts méditerranéens" (Pastoral lands - The diversity and value of Mediterranean open landscapes), a collective publication created in the framework of the Mil'Ouv project has just been published by Editions du Rouergue. It is aimed at a broad readership and highlights the wealth of Mediterranean open pastoral environments through the words of specialists and portraits of breeders.

A more technical booklet has also just been published, intended for technicians, managers of natural spaces, teachers and breeders. It is a collection of technical notes on the management of open environments. Each note is illustrated by examples taken from the field in farms where an eco-pastoral diagnosis has been made using the Mil'Ouv method.

Finally, a new 25-minute video provides the opportunity to hear what breeders have to say. The stories of 3 breeders present the shared discussions and subsequent support put in place at the farms through the Mil'Ouv programme over the last 4 years.

The whole Mil'Ouv team sincerely thanks the breeders who agreed to tell their stories and share their experience. They made a considerable contribution to the production of our publications and videos.

Mil'Ouv...What next ?

The European funding that has supported the LIFE+ Mil’Ouv project since 2013 comes to an end on 31 December 2017. The project partners are now considering how to proceed with the initiatives underway and the technical and financial support needed to achieve them. Agenda items include continued development of individual support for pastoral farms by naturalists and pastoralists working in tandem; continuing to lead discussion groups with breeders; continued provision of training for technicians and teachers. The objective is to maintain the coherence of eco-pastoral activities that are under way or planned in the Occitanie region.
